What to Expect During Your First Visit at Brooklyn Clinical Research

At Brooklyn Clinical Research, located in Flatbush, Brooklyn, we help test new medications and treatments that could make a difference in people’s health. Clinical trials help ensure that medicines are safe and effective before they are approved for public use. Even when a study doesn’t lead to a new treatment, it still helps doctors and researchers learn valuable information for the future. By participating, you contribute to important medical advancements.

Some studies last only a few months, while others may take two years or more. Each study also has specific requirements based on age, medical history, and other health factors. Our job is to make sure you meet these criteria before you enroll. We want to save you time, so we begin with a brief phone conversation before asking you to visit our office.

Your First Visit

When you call us, our patient recruitment coordinators will ask you some basic questions to see if you are likely to qualify for a study. If you are, we’ll schedule your first pre-screening visit. Please set aside at least an hour for this appointment. The doctor may need to review your medical history further, which could take additional time. To avoid feeling rushed, we recommend not booking your visit during one of your busier days. If the team thinks you are likely to qualify for an industry sponsored clinical trial, they’ll schedule a follow-up for an official screening visit. Those visits may take anywhere from two to five hours, depending on the study.

Our office is located at 150 Lenox Road, near Kings County Hospital and SUNY Downstate. You can get here using the 2 or 5 train to Winthrop Station or the Q train to Parkside Avenue.

What Happens Onsite

During your visit, you will meet with a clinical research coordinator who will explain the study in detail through an informed consent form. This form outlines:

  • The purpose and details of the study
  • Your responsibilities and rights
  • What types of care you will get during the study

Once both you and the coordinator sign the informed consent form, the onsite doctor will review your medical history, current medications, and any past clinical trials you’ve participated in. The doctor will determine if you can continue to an official screening visit for your study of interest. If you don’t qualify this time, it doesn’t mean you won’t qualify in the future.

Comfort and Care

We understand that some people feel nervous during medical visits, which can affect test results. This is sometimes called “white coat syndrome.” To help, we provide snacks and water and give you time to relax before any tests are performed.

You are always in control. If you decide you no longer wish to participate in a study, you can let any team member know, and you will be able to withdraw your consent without pressure. You can also choose to stay in our database for future studies or be removed completely—it’s your choice.
